Avondale sits in the West Valley, bordered by Goodyear to the west, Litchfield Park to the north, and Phoenix and Tolleson to the east. The Gila River crosses the south side of the city, where the Agua Fria River joins it from the north.
Avondale incorporated in 1946 and grew from alfalfa and cotton farms into one of the larger West Valley suburbs.
